Dr. Raul Ruiz hopes to unseat Rep. Mary Bono Mack in the 45th District

Dr. Raul Ruiz, an emergency physician at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, announced his plan to unseat Rep. Mary Bono Mack on September 18, according to The Desert Sun.
Tizoc Deaztlan, Ruiz’s campaign director, said that the campaign will focus on the economy, education and health care.
“Health care is a moral issue. People should never fear having health coverage,” said Deaztlan.
Ruiz is the first challenger to enter the 2012 race, in which Mack is seeking her eighth term. He is also the first Latino opponent for Mack, The Desert Sun reported. Ruiz, who grew up in Coachella and is an alumnus of Coachella Valley High School, is planning to use his familiarity with the Coachella Valley rather than political experience to gain support.
“Running for Congress to me means something very different,” he said in an interview with The Desert Sun. “I am a politician. I am a member of this community.”
He also is the head of the Future Physician Leaders program, which mentors aspiring physician students from COD, University of California, Riverside, and Cal State San Bernardino.
“Education is very important to him,” said Deaztlan, “he knows how it feels to want a good education and wants to help students do the same.”
