College of the Desert Presents “The Vagina Monologues” – A VDay Effort to Stop Violence Against Women
by, Denise Figueroa
The College of the Desert Dramatic Arts Company is taking part in the V-Day global activist movement, “One Billion Rising,” whose goal is to bring awareness to the injustices of domestic abuse and violence against women. A talented cast of women will be performing author Eve Ensler’s famous comedic drama, “The Vagina Monologues” at the Pollock Theatre. Show dates are February 22nd – 24th, at 7:00 pm Friday and Saturday and at 2:00 pm on Sunday. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $10 for students. All the proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Coachella Valley non-profit corporation which provides a safe haven for domestic violence victims, Shelter From the Storm.
V-day activists’ main motivation behind “One Billion Rising,” is the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during their lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls in that devastating situation. 2013 marks V-day’s 15th anniversary, and College of the Desert is joining activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and other college campuses across the world in taking a stand against injustice and violence. In 2012, over 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place around the world, and over 300 million people have been educated thanks to attending a V-Day benefit event in their community.
“When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea we could end violence against women,” said author and V-Day founder Eve Ensler. “Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and
gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, students, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign..”
The Vagina Monologues is an Obie Award winning, hilarious, and touching piece that celebrates female sexuality in all its complexity. It’s stories are based on real interviews with 200 women about their views on sex, relationships, and violence against women. This special C.O.D production is directed by Noemi Villela Dean. The impressive cast and crew is made up of professional performers, students, professors, and alumni, including: Rainbow Casey, Jennifer Bennett, Briana Taylor, Jennifer Kiehl, Sandra Taylor Coleman, Karen Schmitt, Nina Charming, Shauna Holmes, Key’Toya Nelson, Veronica Mora, Brieana Holguin, Brittney DeLeon-Reyes, Liridona Leti, Anna Maria Julianelli, Miranda Hane, and Claudia Gomez.
