The Desert Women for Equality, a non-profit organization, is offering free mammograms to all women who are uninsured or underinsured. The program started in June 2006, and continues to grow. The program offers free mammogram scans through out the entire year, from January 10, to December 12, 2013. A clinic was held November 14, at the Coachella Valley Senior Center.
Women must be 40 years of age or older to receive a free mammogram scan, and must not have had a breast implants. Nilda Quinones, a board member says, it is impossible to get a good reading on patients who have had implants.
In order to register you must make an appointment, by calling (760-325-4701) or you can visit the main office in Palm Springs. The main office is located on, Sunrise Way, Suite 209, Palm Springs, 92264, and is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are welcome too, but will be seen after all scheduled appointments. The November 14 clinic in Coachella is full, but walk-ins are allowed.
Quinones says, on average there are about 100 women in each clinic, and there is a 50 percent rate of “repeat” people, who are women who are already registered. Also, if you have registered in the past you will receive notifications and follow-ups each year as well.
The final clinic of the year will be held on December 12 in Cathedral City at City Hall located at 68700 Ave Lalo Guerrero, Cathedral City, CA 92234.
