Christmas is right around the corner and the reindeer are ready to be guided in their second annual race this year. The Guide Dogs of the Desert is an organization that funds people in need of a guide dog and provides training facilities so they are ready to help guide their owners. Each participant helps fund the program while having a good time and racing for a good cause.

The event is called, Santa Paws 5K Run/Walk and will be held on December 21, 2013 at 9 a.m. at Mizell Senior Center Parking Lot 480 Sunrise Way, Palm Springs CA  on the corner of Ramon Road and Sunrise Way. Each participant will be given a Santa outfit, t-shirt, goody bag and a souvenir photo.

Tickets can be purchased online at or for a total of $35. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. but tickets will also be sold the day of event for $40 if there are any left. Last year about 406 signed up for the race and it is said to double this year.

Parents can bring their children to the event. There is also an Elf Dash at 10:30 a.m. for younger kids ages 10 and under for $5 on race day and includes an Elf hat, a holiday button and a special treat. Molly Thorpe, the organizer of the event says, “It’s great for family fun, and a great cause.” She also added that one hundred percent of the proceeds go to Guide Dogs of the Desert.

The event allows you to race as a team or to race as a single player. At the end of the race medals will be given out and there will also be cookies and milk.

Anyone is welcomed to participate at this event. All dogs that enter the race must have all vaccinations up to date and be cleared. For more information about the race or to register please call organizer, Molly Thorpe at (760) 413-6508 or visit
