This summer College of the Desert will be offering the EDGE program to give new and returning students a chance to be placed in higher level classes. The purpose of EDGE is to, “Engage, Develop, Grow and [be] Empowered”, according to the EDGE website.
This free program allows students who have taken the mandatory assessments for math and English, and tested below college level, to retake the assessments, saving both time and money. It offers instruction in math and/or English to quickly build up the necessary skills to be prepared for retesting.
The 3-week EDGE program starts June 6. Classes are from Monday-Thursday.
Morning and afternoon times are available separately for instruction. Morning sessions last from 8-11:30 a.m. and afternoon sessions last from 12-3:30 p.m.
If students tested below college level for both math and English, they can study for both but will have to remain in class for a longer period of time. They will have to come in for the morning session and stay until the end of the afternoon session.
There is a strict attendance policy. Each student must attend all sessions and stay for the given amount of time.
The program is available three times during the summer and offered at several campus locations, as shown in the chart below.
To enroll in the program students must submit an online application at collegeofthedesert.edu/EDGE. If eligibility is confirmed, students will then have to participate in an EDGE orientation before attending the skill review workshops.
Besides retesting, students are given benefits that include priority registration, assistance with financial aid applications and access to textbooks and computers.
EDGE staff is available at the Indio campus every Tuesday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the second floor at the main desk. The Palm Desert campus EDGE staff is located in Liberal Arts 1 and is available Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Katie Chartier, an Edge staff member at the Palm Desert Campus, said that EDGE eligibility was stricter but now the program is available to many more students.
