On Oct. 21, 2018, the New York Times announced that the Trump administration designed a new federal policy that defines sex as only male or female and is set by at birth. This means that transgender people will have to, by law, be considered their assigned at birth gender no matter what the circumstances are.
It seems the Trump Administration wants to exclude transgenders from their civil rights. This is not the first time President Trump has shown what I think is hatred towards transgender people. In July of this year, Trump announced that transgender people will not be allowed to serve in the United States military.
After the new federal policy was announced, many people took to social media to share their opinions. Including some celebrities like Sia, Kathy Griffin, Lady Gaga and many more. Celebrities and big companies used the hashtag #WONTBEERASED to show their support of transgender rights. The hashtag was trending number one on Twitter and is still being used on
every social media platform.
People from all over the world are outraged of this new policy. The LGBTQ+ community and supporters have been protesting in front of the White House since the policy was announced. Protesters have been holding up heart hitting signs that say
“Trans People Can Not Be Erased” “Protect Trans Kids” “We Will Not Be Erased” “Trans Equality Now.”
President Donald Trump responded to the backlash, he said, “I’m protecting everybody. I want to protect our country,” but in my opinion, if he really did want everyone to protect everybody he wouldn’t have allowed this new federal policy. By allowing this new federal policy. He is making it clear that transgenders have no human rights. This new policy isn’t “protecting our country “it is separating the country and making transgenders live in fear.
The legal director of the Human Rights Campaign, Sarah Warbelow, said, “transgender people are frightened.” She also went on
to say the Trump Administration turns their back on transgender people every chance they get. Warbelow is not the only one that thinks this, many other people agree with her.
The United States is supposed to be the land of the free, but with Trump’s new federal policy it is not the land of
the free. Transgender people are having their rights and own freedom taken away from them and now have to live in fear. President Donald Trump does not seem to care that he is hurting millions of people.
A way to avoid more federal policies like this from happening is by voting for politicians and policies that protect transgender people. By voting for politicians and policies that protect transgender people, trans will be able to keep their human rights and not live in fear of their rights being taken away from them.
Transgender rights are human rights and they will not be erased.
