The world of gaming has evolved a long way from playing Pong in your friend’s basement and standing in those long lines at the arcade. We now have PlayStation 4, Xbox One, computers custom made for extreme gaming, and we have the unique console Nintendo Switch. The Switch launched two years ago. Once released, it sold out quickly in the US, you were lucky to even come across one at your nearest store.
The Switch is the first of its kind by pushing the boundaries of console gaming, something that Nintendo enjoys doing. This console is fully portable and is small in size, measuring 4 inches high and 9.4 inches long with a multi-touch LCD 6.2 -inch screen. It weighs approximately .66 pounds.
You can play the console in a few different ways. One way to play on the go is with its joy controllers that slide and attach to the sides of the console. You can play this way comfortably on your couch, in the car, at the doctor’s office, or on the bus. The possibilities are truly endless.
Another on the go feature is the console’s kickstand where you can detach the joy controllers and play together with your friends. COD student, Savannah Morris says her brother uses this feature with his friends at bars and restaurants and is a big reason why she would like to have one herself. You can also purchase carrying cases and screen protectors to ensure its safety.
To play at home you just simply slide the console into the dock port which is only 6.8 inches long and 4.5 inches high. The dock has a USB cable to charge the wireless pro controllers, HDMI port and the power port. The set up is simple and doesn’t require much space and the wires are easy to conceal as well. The video quality is 1080p through with HDMI and 720p playing handheld.
Nintendo’s previous console are made for family and friend entertainment, and the Switch is no different. “The main reason I got the Switch was for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. So I can prove to my friends that I am the best at Smash,” says COD student Victor Maldonado. “You can take it anywhere, you can play smash anywhere with anyone and prove that you’re the best.”
COD Media Lab Technician Alex Zatarain and his fiancé were looking for a console, and they both decided on buying a Switch. “It has different games that both cater to her and I. I like sports games, and there is Mario Kart, Super Smash, and all that. My fiancé has come around to it and really enjoys it. It’s definitely something we can do together.”
Zatarain says he also likes that the Switch has the Nintendo Entertainment System app. The NES has over 20 original classic Nintendo games, like the original Metroid.
Like other consoles, the Switch has exclusive games made just for the Switch. COD student Jade Hickman says she wants to get a switch for games like Pokemon lets Go, Mario Kart, and Mario Odyssey. There is also The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Animal Crossing 2, Luigi’s Mansion 3 and many other Nintendo exclusive titles.
The Switch is a great console, but like other things, it does have some drawbacks. Unlike its competitors, the Switch can’t run games that have high-level graphics. So, unfortunately, you won’t see certain titles available for the Switch. However, this doesn’t stop Nintendo. They are continually working on ways to improve this issue. “The power doesn’t matter as long as the games come out good,” says former COD student Abraham Lopez. “Nintendo takes their time to make sure the games are good. They don’t rush and make a mess.”
The Nintendo Switch is truly a unique console with its portability and group focused gameplay. Gamers can also enjoy titles such as the popular battle royale game Fortnite, Doom, Diablo 3, Octopath, and Dragon Ball Z fighters. Microsoft also announced that they are developing a platform to have the switch compatible with Xbox Live.
