A letter from the Editor

Wow it’s hard to believe that the end of the semester is upon us already. It seems like just last week we were gathering as a class for the first time. Throughout the semester, I’ve seen a tremendous amount of both personal and professional growth from all of The Chaparral staff. As Editor, that’s exactly what I want to see. Building confidence in yourself is a major key to success in journalism. I know this semester wasn’t always easy. We faced some adversity more than once together and as a team we always prevailed and came out on top.

I would like to thank the Chaparral editorial staff for all their hard work they put into producing 5 newspapers this semester. Thank you to Brianna, Alex and Roman for all your hard work and passion. Brianna, you learned Quark so fast and easily became one of the best in the class at using it. Between being Copy Editor and often helping out with Trending you were always here to work and get the job done. Roman, you did a great job balancing being both the Production Manager while also being a consistent contributor to the Sports page. Alex, you’re the Photoshop master and you did great with ads. Without you guys the paper would never get done. I also want to thank Renee and Luis for sacrificing their Friday nights to stay with us here in the newsroom and help out with production.

A huge shoutout and thank you to all the staff writers this semester. I know some of you had prior experience working in this type of environment, but for most being in a newsroom, writing stories and seeing your words in print was a huge stepping stone in your journalism career, no matter how far you end up taking it. A big thanks to those writers who always put in the extra time and effort. Writers like Alexia, Luis, Alex, Jon and David often stayed after class and even wrote 2, sometimes 3 or 4 articles for one issue of the Chaparral. That dedication is incredible and greatly appreciated.

I would like to personally thank our advisor Laurilie Jackson for believing in me as an editor and giving me the chance. I would also like to thank the Chaparral staff who came before me for teaching me all I needed to know for the job. One last big thank you to those who make the Chaparral possible: Our Readers! All of us here hope you enjoyed our articles over the past 4 months.

I’m looking forward to being back in the Chaparral newsroom Spring 2018 to bring more quality news stories to the College of the Desert campus!
