The final episode of Dancing With the Stars Season 34 aired Nov. 25, and it was intense. The ballroom had everyone on the edge of their seats as viewers waited to see who would take home the Mirrorball Trophy.
The finalists and their partners performed three styles of dance: a judges’ choice, an instant dance and a freestyle. The judges’ choice is a new routine choreographed in a style chosen by one of the judges. An instant dance is a surprise routine contestants must learn in a short amount of time. The freestyle is the final performance, with no rules, allowing couples to showcase their skills one last time.
While the competition was close, the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy went to wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin and his partner, Witney Carson, making them the Season 34 champions. Irwin had been a fan-predicted winner from the very beginning after delivering a standout debut dance — an electric jive to Steppenwolf’s hit song “Born to Be Wild.” From the start, fans were amazed by the high-energy performances he and Carson brought to the ballroom each week.
Irwin also made history alongside his sister, Bindi Irwin, as the first celebrity siblings to each win the Mirrorball Trophy. Bindi won Season 21 with her partner, now-judge Derek Hough.
This finale marks the second Mirrorball Trophy win for pro Witney Carson, who earned her first victory in Season 19 with her partner and current host Alfonso Ribeiro. Fans of the show have long said it was overdue, as Carson was runner-up in Seasons 27 and 28 with partners Milo Manheim and Kel Mitchell. Her partnership with Manheim, in particular, is considered a fan-favorite duo and left many viewers outraged when they lost to pro Sharna Burgess and her partner, Bobby Bones.
Carson now joins a group of professionals with multiple wins. Jenna Johnson, Cheryl Burke, Julianne Hough, Kym Johnson and Peta Murgatroyd have each won two Mirrorball Trophies, while Val Chmerkovskiy and Mark Ballas have three each. Derek Hough leads all pros with six total wins.
The freestyle remains the most anticipated dance of every finale. Irwin and Carson delivered a high-energy routine to “Black and Gold” by Sam Sparro and “The Nights” by Avicii. Social media personality Alix Earle and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, commanded the floor with an intense freestyle to “Maneater” by Nelly Furtado and “Sports Car” by Tate McRae.
Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles and her partner, Ezra Sosa, performed an iconic freestyle to “Bow Down (Homecoming Live)” by Beyoncé and “Motivation” by Normani, who joined them on the dance floor. The routine marked Sosa’s first finale appearance as a pro. Television personality Dylan Efron and pro Daniella Karagach followed with a passionate freestyle to “Something in the Heavens” by Lewis Capaldi. Film and television actress Elaine Hendrix brought Broadway flair to the ballroom with partner Alan Bersten, dancing to “I Hope I Get It (From A Chorus Line)” by District 78.
One eliminated pro and celebrity later appeared on Alex Cooper’s podcast, Call Her Daddy, to perform the freestyle they would have danced had they reached the finale. Pro Mark Ballas and his partner, Whitney Leavitt, received mixed reactions online, with some calling the move “incentive” to post their routine less than two days after the finale, while others felt it was necessary after Leavitt’s early elimination. Ballas and Leavitt also discussed their season journey during the podcast appearance.
Immediately following the finale, all finalists and their partners flew from California to New York to reflect on their experiences on Good Morning America. As tears were shed and memories shared, the cast said they had become a family and that dance would remain a major part of their lives.
As Dancing With the Stars Season 34 comes to a close, fans can still catch the holiday special, which aired Dec. 2. The series is expected to return next fall for Season 35.
