College of the Desert’s Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts organized a group exhibition called “Made in Coachella,” which celebrates artists from around the Coachella Valley.
The exhibition was located at the Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts and was on view from Nov. 4 to Dec. 4.
Made in Coachella celebrates the rich art within the Coachella Valley. Bringing together a wide range of local artists to illustrate the Coachella Valley’s community, environment, and shared experience. Featuring work from more than thirty artists, the exhibition includes collaborative projects, co-created works, and pieces the show highlight how place-based storytelling and collective expression continue to show the Valley’s role in art.
The artwork in the exhibition included details of the Coachella Valley and the artists’ heritage or culture. From nostalgic board games to iconic desert cacti, this exhibition captured the essence of the valley through sculptures and artwork.
Along with the exhibition, there was a student art market at the opening reception where students could display their art and earn a profit. Students displayed different types of artworks, like T-shirts, stickers, and posters. The student sellers were provided with a table and a tent to set up their work. Attendees were able to walk around and support students’ art while enjoying food, refreshments, and entertainment.
The student art market benefits students by giving them an opportunity to showcase their work, connect with others, and earn a profit at the same time. It forces students to step outside of their comfort zone and question if this is a career path they would like to pursue. If not, students are more than welcome to solely sell their art and enjoy the creative atmosphere. The market is here to support students’ art journeys, offering experience, opportunities, and a welcoming, supportive community.
Mya Bell, a Social Sciences major, has participated in the markets twice and shared her experience, highlighting the stress-free environment and the need for more student participation. “I love talking to people. I love making friends with all the other market people. It’s great energy here,” Bell said.
COD continues to support the art and creativity of students through events like exhibitions and markets. The Marks Center helps advance a student’s creative skills, launch their art career, and be an outlet for artistic expression. Giving both emerging and established artists real-world experience through diverse events, hands-on learning, and flexible degree and certificate options. Whether you are a student with a passion for art or have a desire to support students, keep an eye on the Marks Center, they have it all.
