College of the Desert’s plEDGE Program is expanding its resources and offering every Coachella Valley resident tuition-free education.
The plEDGE Program has provided thousands of local high school graduates with free tuition & fees since 2017. As long as students meet requirements such as full-time enrollment, 2.0 GPA, and volunteer hours, they are eligible to receive two full years free at COD.
Aside from free tuition & fees, students are offered financial aid assistance and financial literacy exposure, follow-up services and workshops, priority registration for one semester, first and second-year support services and meetings with faculty and staff.
plEDGE For All is a separate phased program offering the same resources and benefits but to all Coachella Valley residents regardless of age or background. Starting in the fall 2026 semester, the program will begin with a pilot group and aim to serve all residents by 2030. This expansion focuses on promoting education by allowing locals to attend college tuition-free.
Katie Chartier, Interim Dean of Counseling and Director of Student Success and Outreach, hopes plEDGE For All eliminates financial barriers and assists in the navigation of higher education. Chartier said, “Sometimes that process can be hard, especially for first-generation students or students who don’t directly come from high school.”
To be part of the pilot group in the fall, applications can be found at www.collegeofthedesert.edu and are open until May 31. The qualifying participants are veterans, returning students with 30 units or more, 1st responder trainees with the program PACE and students who have a high school equivalency. Every year, the program plans to include more groups until it is available to the entire Coachella Valley.
To support the expected increase in enrollment, the program will add staff members and expand student support services at COD. During the development process, Chartier said one of the challenges has been anticipating the specific needs of incoming students, which is why the program will begin with a pilot group.
“The program is evolving as we go,” Chartier said.
Students participating in plEDGE For All will meet different eligibility requirements than those in the traditional plEDGE Program, depending on employment status and personal responsibilities. Program leaders plan to evaluate and adjust services and requirements each year to better support students throughout their educational journeys.
Locally, tuition-free education is expected to benefit the entire Coachella Valley by increasing educational attainment and strengthening the workforce. The expansion aims to reduce financial barriers for students while creating additional career and professional opportunities that could positively impact the community as a whole.
