COD’s women’s volleyball is off to a positive start this season, welcoming their first pre-season win against the College of the Desert Alumni team. Following the win, Co-Head Coach, Detlev Rothe stated, about the upcoming season, “we’ve got great enthusiasm and confidence in our young core and believe we can make a strong mark in the PCAC conference and the state rankings overall.”
The team is starting with four freshman players, including two of their star players, Ashtyn Lyneis, (setter), Baylie Dashner, (outside hitter), and state ranked player, Nicole Svoboda, who is ranked for blocks. The girls ran with their confidence into their first regular season game at Orange Coast against Rio Hondo on Aug. 30, winning 3-0. Though later the same day they played Orange Coast College, losing 3-0, making the teams first day of season statistics, 1-1.
Continuing the teams losing streak at Riverside Community College on Sept. 1, the girls came up with a final score of 3-2, despite Dashners attempts totaling 23 kills. Sept. 6, brought a whole new game against East Los Angeles City College, though the girls fell short with a score of 3-2.
The first regular season game at home on Sept. 8, ended by Antelope Valley being felled with a score of 3-1, with sophomore London Felder leading the team with 18 digs. With their confidence back the next game home game of the season will be on Sept. 20 against Victor Valley, and all students are encouraged to come.
